Round Lake is a village in Lake County, Illinois, located approximately 55 miles northwest of Chicago. The village was incorporated in 1908 by Amarias M. White and partners. White had previously offered the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad free land to establish a station in the area.
Starting in 1901, the Armour Company harvested ice from Round Lake for refrigerated transport. After a 1917 fire destroyed the company's operation, the company converted its dormitory into a rural summer retreat for employees, which spurred subsequent residential development. Round Lake has Metra commuter rail service on the Milwaukee District North Line.
