St. Charles is a city in Kane and DuPage counties, Illinois, located approximately 35 miles west of Chicago. Originally settled in 1833–1834, the area was first called Charleston; the name was changed to St. Charles in 1839 when the community was incorporated, as the original name was already claimed by a downstate municipality.
